The full moon has a way of drawing the eye upward. In many traditions, it is treated as a quiet checkpoint: not a time for starting something new, but for noticing what you're still carrying and choosing to set it down.
This full moon ritual is made for beginners. It has three simple steps (clear, purify, then set what's next) and needs very little: ten quiet minutes, a window you can open, and something to clear the air with. You don't need to know anything about astrology, and there is no right or wrong way to feel while you do it.
In our practice, we've found that the simplest rituals are the ones people return to. So we've kept this one small, ready to use at any full moon of the year.
Why a full moon release ritual?
Each full moon is the brightest point in the moon's monthly cycle, a fitting moment to notice what has run its course. A full moon release ritual simply gives that noticing a shape.
A practical tip for any month: check when the moon reaches its fullest where you are. If it peaks in the early morning, the night before is usually the best time to sit beneath it. The moon looks full for a night or so either side, so there's no need to be exact.
This month: the Hunter's Moon (October 2026)
Full moon: Monday 26 October 2026, 06:11 SAST, around sunrise.
Best night for your ritual: Sunday 25 October, the night leading into it, when the moon rises around dusk and looks full all night. Monday evening works too.
The name: "Hunter's Moon" is an old Northern Hemisphere name for the first full moon after the Harvest Moon, traditionally a time when hunters tracked by moonlight once the fields were cleared. Here in South Africa it arrives in spring, a gentle moment to set down what you'd rather not carry into summer.
Before you begin
Gather a few simple things:
- a white sage smudge stick
- a selenite wand and a gentle incense (our purity kit includes both, with a heat-resistant dish)
- a heat-proof bowl with a little sand
- matches or a lighter
- a pen and a small piece of paper
- a moonstone bracelet, or a crystal you'd like to keep close (optional)
If you'd like somewhere to write, download our free Full Moon Release Ritual Workbook, printable pages that follow each step and give you a page to return to at the next full moon.
Choose a time when you won't be interrupted. Open a window, set your phone aside, and take a few slow breaths before you start.
Step 1: Clear the space
Hold the Californian White Sage Smudge Stick – Large 22 cm at an angle and light the tip. Let it catch for a few seconds, then wave or fan the flame out gently — never blow it. You're looking for a soft glow and a slow, steady ribbon of smoke.
Carry it from room to room, letting the smoke drift into corners and along doorways, or simply sit with it a moment. As you go, you might quietly name what you're ready to set down: a worry you've carried, a habit that has grown tired, a conversation you keep replaying.
When you've finished, press the ember firmly into the sand until no smoke remains. Our step-by-step guide to smudging your house covers each room in more detail.

Step 1 · Clear the space

White sage (Salvia apiana) is sacred to Indigenous communities of the Americas, and smoke cleansing has deep roots in many cultures, including here in South Africa. We source our sage through trusted suppliers, and we invite you to use it with care. You might also enjoy White Sage vs Palo Santo vs Imphepho.
Step 2: Purify further
Once the sage has cleared the room, a second, gentler pass helps it settle. We use the Sacred Elements Selenite Smudge and Incense Kit – Purity Ritual Set, which brings together a selenite wand, a herbal incense blend, a heat-resistant dish and an affirmation card.
Light one incense stick, let the tip glow, then fan it gently so a soft smoke rises. Rest it in the dish. Then take the selenite wand and move slowly through the room once more, or hold it a few centimetres from your body and sweep it gently from head to toe.
Selenite is traditionally associated with clarity, and its cool, pearly glow is lovely in low light. If the affirmation card speaks to you, read it aloud. Keep your selenite dry afterwards, as it doesn't like water.

- Keep a window open while you work, and for a while afterwards.
- Hold a dish beneath the sage to catch falling ash.
- Never leave smouldering sage or burning incense unattended.
- Keep children, pets and anything flammable well away.
- If anyone in your home is sensitive to smoke, keep it brief, or skip the smoke and begin with the selenite.
- Make sure everything is fully out and cool before you put it away.
Step 3: Set what's next
Once the room feels settled, sit somewhere comfortable. If you can see the moon from a window, face it.
Hold the Blue Moonstone Bracelet 8mm in your palm for a few slow breaths. Then write one short sentence about what you'd like to make room for. Keep it gentle and in the present tense, for example:
"I am making space for rest."
"I move into this next month with patience."
Read it aloud once, softly. Then slip the bracelet onto your wrist.
Moonstone has long been linked with the moon's cycles. It is traditionally associated with calm and intuition, and traditionally worn as a quiet companion through change. We think of it as a small reminder of the sentence you wrote tonight, something to carry on your wrist once the smoke has cleared.
Keep your paper somewhere you'll see it. At the next full moon, you might read it again and notice what has shifted.
Keep it simple
If rituals are new to you, a few gentle thoughts:
- You don't need all three steps. Sage alone, or simply the intention, is enough.
- Use your own words. There is no special script. Plain, honest language works well.
- Let it be imperfect. If the sage won't stay lit or your mind wanders, that's part of it. Relight, breathe and carry on.
- Return to it. A ritual tends to grow more meaningful with repetition. A new full moon arrives roughly every 29½ days.
A gentle close
The moon doesn't ask you to be finished with anything. Just willing to put a little of it down.
However you mark this full moon, we hope it brings you a little stillness.
With smoke and intention,
