What Is Smudging — and Smoke Cleansing?

Smudging, in its traditional sense, refers to a sacred ceremonial practice belonging to specific Indigenous North American peoples. The burning of white sage, cedar, and sweetgrass in these traditions is not simply a wellness trend — it is living ceremony, tied to prayer, healing, and community.

Smoke cleansing is the broader term used to describe the practice of burning herbs to shift the energy of a space or person — a practice found across cultures worldwide, from incense in Buddhist temples to imphepho in Zulu healing ceremonies, to frankincense in Catholic and Ethiopian Orthodox rites.

At Secret Sense, we carry plants from multiple traditions and we encourage every customer to approach them with curiosity and respect. The smoke you choose matters — not because one is superior, but because each one carries a distinct intention and a different relationship to the land it came from.

What's in This Collection — Choose by Smoke

White Sage (Salvia apiana)

The most widely recognised cleansing smoke in the world. White sage produces a dense, aromatic smoke traditionally used to clear stagnant or heavy energy from a space — the go-to choice after illness, conflict, or whenever a thorough energetic reset is needed. We carry both a compact 10cm mini stick for personal rituals and a full 22cm stick for whole-home clearing — certified organic and ethically cultivated.

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens)

Holy wood from the dry forests of Ecuador and Peru. Where sage clears, palo santo invites — warmth, calm, and positive energy. Its sweet, resinous scent burns gently and briefly, going out on its own and ready to be relit. Our Tribal Soul Palo Santo sticks are sourced from naturally fallen trees. For a combined clearing and inviting smoke, try the White Sage & Palo Santo combination sticks.

Imphepho (Helichrysum odoratissimum)

South Africa's own sacred smoke — and one of the most underused plants in modern ritual practice. Imphepho has been burned by Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, and San communities for centuries to connect with ancestors, invite guidance, and open sacred space. Soft, earthy, and grounding. Our Imphepho Smudge Wand is locally sourced and offers a direct connection to this land's own healing traditions.

Botanical Blends & Sacred Combinations

For those who want the layered experience of multiple plants in a single stick — lavender & white sage, mugwort & white sage, juniper & white sage, and palo santo combinations. Each blend is chosen for its complementary intentions, not just its scent.

Smoke-Free Cleansing

If smoke is not suitable for your space, our Aromafume smudge spray range delivers the same cleansing intention in a water-based mist. Also available in our smokeless incense collection.

How to Choose the Right Smudge for You

Choose white sage when you need a deep, thorough reset — after conflict, illness, moving into a new home, or whenever a space feels genuinely heavy or stagnant.

Choose palo santo when the work is about welcoming rather than clearing — before meditation, creative work, or any intentional gathering. Also the gentlest entry point for beginners.

Choose imphepho when you are seeking ancestral connection, grounding, or a deeper relationship with the land you live on. Particularly meaningful during times of transition or reflection.

Choose a blend when your intention is layered — lavender for calm, mugwort for dreamwork and intuition, juniper for protection and boundaries.

How to Use a Smudge Stick — A Simple Ritual

1

Set your intention. Before you light anything, take a moment to decide what you want this ritual to do. Clear what no longer serves you. Welcome something new. Honour the space you're in.

2

Open a window or door. Smoke needs somewhere to go — and so does what you're releasing. Even a small opening is enough.

3

Light the tip. Hold the smudge stick at a 45-degree angle and light the tip until it catches. Allow a small flame for a few seconds, then gently fan or wave it out — never blow. The stick should now be producing smoke.

4

Move with intention. Carry the smudge stick through your space — corners, doorways, windowsills, any areas that feel heavy. Move slowly. Allow the smoke to drift naturally.

5

Extinguish safely. Press the tip firmly into a heat-safe bowl of sand or earth until fully out. Never blow out a sacred flame — in many traditions, blowing breath onto an offering is considered disrespectful to the spirit of the plant.

A Note on Sustainability and Sourcing

The global popularity of white sage has created real pressure on wild plant populations in California — and on the Indigenous communities for whom it is a living sacred plant. We take this seriously.

All white sage at Secret Sense is certified organic and cultivated on farms, not wild-harvested. Our palo santo comes from naturally fallen trees with documented provenance. Our imphepho is locally sourced from South African growers where possible.

If you ever have a question about where a product comes from, ask us — we will answer honestly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between smudging and smoke cleansing?

Smudging is a specific ceremonial practice belonging to certain Indigenous North American traditions. Smoke cleansing is the broader term for burning sacred herbs to shift energy — a practice found across cultures worldwide. We use both terms respectfully and encourage awareness of their origins.

Is your white sage ethically sourced?

Yes. We source certified organic, ethically cultivated Californian white sage from farms rather than wild-harvested stock — protecting both the plant and the Indigenous traditions it belongs to.

How often should I smudge my home?

There is no fixed rule. Many people smudge during seasonal transitions, after illness or conflict, when moving into a new home, or before gatherings. A monthly clearing rhythm works well for most homes. Trust your sense of when the space needs it.

What is the best smudge stick for beginners?

Palo santo — warm scent, minimal smoke, easy to use. A 10cm white sage mini stick is ideal once you're ready for deeper clearing. Imphepho is the most grounded choice for anyone drawn to South African ancestral traditions.

How long does a smudge stick last?

A 10cm white sage stick gives 4–6 sessions when extinguished correctly. A 22cm stick lasts 10–15 sessions. Palo santo sticks can be relit many times and typically last months of regular use.

Can I use smudge sticks if I have asthma or smoke sensitivity?

Yes — our Aromafume smudge spray range offers a smoke-free cleansing alternative. Always burn smudge sticks in a well-ventilated space and never leave them unattended.

What should I use to catch the ash when smudging?

An abalone shell, ceramic dish, or heat-safe bowl with a little sand or earth works well. Never rest a burning stick on a wooden or fabric surface.
