Three Resins. One Ceremonial Tradition. Thousands of Years of Smoke.

What is the Sacred Resin Trinity bundle? The Sacred Resin Trinity is a curated bundle of three natural resin incenses — Frankincense, Myrrh and Benzoin — each in a 60g pack, 180g in total. These three resins have been gathered and burned together in ceremonial practice across cultures for thousands of years: Frankincense to purify and elevate the space, Myrrh to ground and deepen the breath, Benzoin to comfort and protect the spirit. Each resin arrives in its raw, unprocessed crystal form, releasing its smoke slowly and deliberately when placed on a glowing charcoal disc. Together they form the classical Three Kings sacred trio, known in Christian Pontifical ceremony, Buddhist and Hindu temple worship, and esoteric traditions worldwide. The bundle offers a 20% saving compared to purchasing each 60g pack individually.

What Each Resin Brings to Your Altar

  • Purification (Frankincense): Bright, lemony-resinous smoke traditionally associated with clearing stagnant energy, elevating mental clarity and opening connection to higher awareness.
  • Grounding (Myrrh): Deep, earthy and balsamic — traditionally burned for ancestral honouring, grief, root-chakra grounding and the kind of stillness that anchors a practice.
  • Protection & Comfort (Benzoin): Warm, sweet and vanilla-like, Benzoin — known as loban or sambrani across South African traditions — is traditionally used to seal a cleansed space and invite abundance.
  • Bundle Value: 20% Saving
  • Complete Ritual System: Each resin is a distinct instrument. Work with them separately for focused intention, or blend all three on one disc for the classical Three Kings aroma.
  • Gifting & Discovery: The most complete entry point into natural resin incense — ideal for practitioners expanding their altar, or as a considered gift for someone beginning their ceremonial journey.

Burning the Ancient Way: How to Use Your Resin

How do I burn resin incense on a charcoal disc? Resin incense releases its fragrance only when heated — it requires a self-lighting charcoal disc and a heat-safe burner rather than an open flame or incense stick holder. The process is simple and deeply satisfying once you have worked through it once. You will find charcoal discs and brass burners in our incense collection. Prepare your space before you begin — open a window, settle your intention, and allow yourself the gift of a few unhurried minutes. When your session is complete, wave the flame out rather than blowing — a small honouring of the spirit held within the plant's resin.

Step-by-step ritual method

  1. Prepare your burner: Place a heat-safe brass, ceramic or soapstone burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Half-fill it with sand, rice or ash to insulate against heat and steady the charcoal disc.
  2. Light the charcoal: Using metal tongs (never bare fingers), hold a self-lighting charcoal disc and touch the edge to a lighter flame. The disc will spark and crackle briefly — this is normal. Set it hollow-side up on the sand.
  3. Wait for the grey ash: Allow 2–5 minutes for a thin grey ash to form across the surface of the disc. This signals the charcoal is evenly heated and ready. Placing resin on a disc that is not yet fully lit produces harsh, acrid smoke.
  4. Place the resin: Using a teaspoon or small spoon, place a pea-sized piece of your chosen resin onto the hollow centre of the disc. The aroma will begin to rise within seconds. Add a fresh piece every 20–30 minutes as needed.
  5. Close the ritual: When you are finished, allow the charcoal to cool completely in the burner before handling or disposing of it. The disc remains hot for up to two hours. Burn only in a ventilated room, away from curtains, pets and children, and never leave unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between frankincense, myrrh and benzoin? +

Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) carries a bright, lemony-piney aroma traditionally associated with purification, mental clarity and elevated spiritual states. It is the resin of opening — used to clear a space before ceremony and invite higher presence.

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is earthy, balsamic and gently bitter — traditionally used for grounding, grief, ancestral connection and deep inner stillness. Where frankincense rises, myrrh roots.

Benzoin (Styrax benzoin), known as loban or sambrani in South African Hindu and Cape Malay traditions, offers a warm, sweet, vanilla-like scent traditionally associated with comfort, emotional protection and abundance. It softens a space and seals it with warmth. Burned together, the three form the classical Three Kings sacred trio found in ceremonies across Christian, Buddhist, Islamic and indigenous traditions.

What is the spiritual meaning of frankincense, myrrh and benzoin? +

Frankincense has been burned for over 5,000 years to elevate prayer, open the crown chakra and purify sacred space. In the Christian nativity tradition it represents the gift of the divine; in ancient Egyptian temple rites it accompanied the morning invocation of Ra. Its smoke is traditionally understood to carry intention upward.

Myrrh bridges life and transformation. Carried by the Magi, used in Egyptian anointing rites and present in burial and resurrection ceremonies across many lineages, it is associated with the root chakra, ancestral honouring, and the deep, unhurried process of letting go. It is the resin of the liminal — of thresholds, crossings and the wisdom that arrives through grief.

Benzoin holds the energy of comfort, abundance and protection. Burned in Buddhist monasteries, Catholic and Orthodox churches (where it is a key component of Pontifical incense) and Hindu puja rooms for centuries, it is traditionally used to seal a space after cleansing — inviting warmth, a sense of arrival and the feeling of being held. Together the trio covers the three pillars of ceremonial work: purification, grounding and protection.

Is resin incense safe to burn around children, pets and during pregnancy? +

Always burn resin incense in a well-ventilated room with at least one window open. Keep sessions to 20–30 minutes rather than burning for extended periods. Pets: Cats are particularly sensitive to airborne aromatics and should be kept in a separate room while burning. Dogs generally tolerate resin smoke better but should always have the option to leave the room. If any pet shows signs of distress, extinguish the charcoal immediately.

Children and respiratory sensitivity: Resin smoke is denser than incense stick smoke — limit sessions in rooms where children under five, or anyone with asthma, are present. Pregnancy: We recommend speaking with your healthcare practitioner before regular resin incense use during pregnancy. Never leave a lit charcoal disc unattended — it remains hot for up to two hours after smoking has stopped.

How long does one 60g pack of resin incense last? +

A 60g pack typically yields between 30 and 50 individual burns, depending on the size of the piece you use each session. Using a pea-sized piece at a time — which is all that is needed for a full room fragrance — most practitioners find a single 60g pack lasts between four and eight weeks of regular use.

The Sacred Resin Trinity bundle provides 180g across three resins, which represents a generous ceremonial supply — enough to explore each resin individually, experiment with blending, and still have a meaningful amount to share or gift. It is the most efficient way to begin a sustained resin practice.

Can I blend all three resins together on one charcoal disc? +

Yes — burning small pieces of all three together is the classical Three Kings or Pontifical blend, used in Catholic, Orthodox and ecumenical ceremonies and associated with the incense of the Magi. The frankincense lifts the blend, the myrrh adds depth and body, and the benzoin rounds it with warmth and sweetness. The combined aroma is richer and more complex than any single resin alone.

If you are new to resin incense, we recommend spending a few sessions with each resin individually first — this develops your sensory familiarity with their distinct characters and makes the blended experience far more meaningful. When you are ready to combine, begin with roughly equal portions and adjust according to which quality you wish to emphasise.

How do I build a simple daily resin ritual? +

A daily resin ritual need not be elaborate to be meaningful. Many practitioners keep it simple: light the charcoal, place a small piece of resin, sit quietly for five to ten minutes before the day begins or at its close. The act of preparation — gathering the burner, waiting for the grey ash, choosing the resin — is itself a practice in presence.

A simple three-resin rhythm: begin the week with Frankincense to set clarity of intention; move to Myrrh mid-week for reflection and grounding; close the week with Benzoin to invite rest, comfort and a sense of wholeness. Complement your resin practice with a ritual candle — Nina, the sacred flame, is traditionally kept present during ceremony so that any released energy is transmuted rather than simply dispersed. Wave the flame out gently at the close of your ritual, never blow it.
