Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is earthy, balsamic and gently bitter — traditionally used for grounding, grief, ancestral connection and deep inner stillness. Where frankincense rises, myrrh roots.

Benzoin (Styrax benzoin), known as loban or sambrani in South African Hindu and Cape Malay traditions, offers a warm, sweet, vanilla-like scent traditionally associated with comfort, emotional protection and abundance. It softens a space and seals it with warmth. Burned together, the three form the classical Three Kings sacred trio found in ceremonies across Christian, Buddhist, Islamic and indigenous traditions.

Frankincense has been burned for over 5,000 years to elevate prayer, open the crown chakra and purify sacred space. Benzoin holds the energy of comfort, abundance and protection. Burned in Buddhist monasteries, Catholic and Orthodox churches (where it is a key component of Pontifical incense) and Hindu puja rooms for centuries, it is traditionally used to seal a space after cleansing — inviting warmth, a sense of arrival and the feeling of being held. Together the trio covers the three pillars of ceremonial work: purification, grounding and protection.

Always burn resin incense in a well-ventilated room with at least one window open. Keep sessions to 20–30 minutes rather than burning for extended periods. Pets: Cats are particularly sensitive to airborne aromatics and should be kept in a separate room while burning. Dogs generally tolerate resin smoke better but should always have the option to leave the room. If any pet shows signs of distress, extinguish the charcoal immediately.

Children and respiratory sensitivity: Resin smoke is denser than incense stick smoke — limit sessions in rooms where children under five, or anyone with asthma, are present. Many practitioners keep it simple: light the charcoal, place a small piece of resin, sit quietly for five to ten minutes before the day begins or at its close.
